Types of Machines

Figure below shows a simplified layout of various machines based on the method of movement. Nowadays, the use of machining centres and multi-task machining centres has become very popular. The simplified layout below does not really go into detail, but it is important to have an understanding of the various machines available.

Lathe

A lathe is a machine that is used to rotate a workpiece whilst it is rotating a tool is used to machine the workpiece into a desired geometry. The tool used for external turning is called a tool holder, while the tool used for boring (internal turning) is generally called a boring bar.

Milling Machine

A milling machine is a machine that has a spindle. A milling cutter is then attached to the spindle. Once a milling cutter is attached, the spindle' is rotated and moved into a workpiece to create a desired geometry. A milling cutter is a round cutting tool with teeth on the periphery or on the end face.

Bench Drilling Machine

A bench drilling machine is a machine used for drilling. reaming' and tapping' of holes. Generally the drills are HSS with diameters up. to 13mm.

Radial Drilling machine

This type of machine can be used for the same applications as the bench drilling machine. The main difference being is that larger workpiece material can be machined.

Machining Centre

A machining centre is a machines that has both an ATC (automated tool change system) and is computer numerically controlled. Therefore it can be used to carry out a wide range of machining methods with high machining efficiency. It can not however carry out turning.

Multi Task Machining Centre

A multi-task machining centre has the same function as a machining centre. However, these machines generally have 2 spindles (main & sub) thus allowing it to be able to carry out numerous machining methods or machining (turning, milling, slotting and hobbing)

Automatic Lathe

An automatic lathe is a machine that is use for mass production. Automatic lathes include those for bar work. There are also automatic lathes that can carry out a wide range of machining methods. The work is feed into the machine using a bar feed.
